Let’s be completely honest. Most fishing mini games in RPGs are absolute torture. You just mash a single button, stare at a bobber, and pray for decent RNG. But what if an indie studio built an entire game around casting a line, backed by an incredibly weird, emotional storyline? Fishing Paradiso totally flips the script. Whether you are killing a rainy afternoon in Vancouver, riding the Tube through London, or chilling on a balcony in Auckland, this bizarre little gem is going to completely hook you.
The premise here is honestly wild. You do not start off buying bait at a boring local tackle shop.
You actually wake up dead. You play as a young boy who suddenly finds himself stranded on a gorgeous tropical island in heaven, violently woken up by a bossy little bird. Naturally, you are absolutely starving. To satisfy your appetite in the afterlife, you have to grab a rod and learn how to fish. It is a strangely cozy, yet entirely surreal setup that grabs your attention immediately.
This isn’t just some mindless idle clicker where you tap the screen and walk away. It is a full blown narrative RPG.
You actively have to upgrade your gear and heavily enhance your fishing abilities by grinding out specific storyline quests. There are over 100 different species of weird, otherworldly fish to track down. It creates this insanely satisfying, addictive loop where you are constantly pushing for just one more cast to see what kind of monster you can pull out of the water.
If you played the deeply emotional, tear jerking indie hit Bear’s Restaurant, you are in for a massive treat.
Fishing Paradiso actually serves as a direct sequel to that heavy, narrative driven adventure. You will run into a ton of familiar faces while you explore the island. Seeing old friends like Mr. Bear and Cat randomly show up to hang out just adds this incredibly charming, nostalgic layer to the whole experience.
You might think a pixel art game about catching fish in heaven would stay pretty relaxed. You would be entirely wrong.
The plot goes completely off the rails in the absolute best way possible. You start out just trying to catch a decent meal, and suddenly you are uncovering the dark folklore of a mysterious giant fish and stumbling into a massive, hidden conspiracy run by actual Angels. Oh, and you eventually end up dealing with a rocket ship launching into outer space. This is absolutely not a simple, relaxing weekend fishing trip.
Grab your virtual rod, level up your line, and see if you can figure out what is actually going on in the afterlife.
Stability improvements.
